Did you know that the U.S. requires approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells every day? This equates to one transfusion every two seconds. The American Red Cross is currently facing a critical blood shortage. To address this need, GreenLifeTech™ is developing blood storage solutions for civilian EMS and pre-hospital battlefield wound care. These systems will allow blood to be stored in a low oxygen environment, increasing shelf life when both refrigerated and non-refrigerated.

GreenLifeTech's solutions are designed to increase the shelf life of transfusion blood and other blood products in austere environments through the utilization of our novel oxygen reduction technology. “Achieving DARPA Awardable status is a massive step for our company as we aim to redefine the standard for battlefield care and help protect the lives of American soldiers,” said Dr. Bruce Roesner, President and Chief Technical Officer. GreenLifeTech's video, Deployable Oxygen Reduction Technology for Extending Platelet Rich Plasma and Whole Blood Shelf Life, accessible only by government customers on the DARPA ERIS Marketplace, presents an actual use case in which the company shows the function and use cases of our unique process.

Whole Blood and other blood-related products decay in the presence of oxygen. Commercial blood bags allow for oxygen permeation, prematurely leading to spoilage. Additionally, the blood bag material is actually saturated with oxygen at the time of donation, further reducing shelf life. The data above shows that, when stored in our reduced oxygen environment, the amount of oxygen penetration is significantly reduced. A further reduction is seen when the bag is stored in an oxygen-reduced environment before donation, eliminating oxygen that is saturated in the blood bag.
